Windows 11 Gets Big Boost From Microsoft Gaming – But It Still Has One Big Problem

Microsoft is gearing up to release DirectStorage 1.1, its tool for Windows 11 that can dramatically improve load times for the best PC games.

DirectStorage uses GPU decompression rather than using the PC CPU to decompress game assets such as textures and other graphics. With modern PC games becoming more and more ambitious, traditional CPU decompression can cause performance bottlenecks. Removing this bottleneck by moving the decompression to the graphics card of a gaming PC (or the best gaming laptops) means games can load much faster – especially when installed on the latest generation of Gen4 NVMe SSDs.
