The first season of The Rings of Power just premiered on Prime Video, but the show’s cast and crew are already turning their attention to season two.
Speaking exclusively to at The Rings of Power UK party, the cast of the Prime Video series was hesitant to confirm an exact date for when filming would begin on the next installment of the epic fantasy show. Given the level of secrecy surrounding Amazon’s Lord of the Rings season 1, and the show more generally, this is to be expected.
“I’m not sure what we can say about that,” said Robert Aramayo, who plays Elrond on the series. However, Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, added, “We start filming soon – and we’re very excited.”
Despite the cast’s reluctance to reveal any concrete news about when The Rings of Power season 2 will begin filming, executive producer Lindsey Weber was more open. And based on what Weber told us, principal photography for the show’s next season is almost ready to begin.
Discussing the Season 2 start date as part of a response she gave around the Embracer Group’s recent acquisition of the Lord of the Rings IP, Weber said, “We’re totally consumed with this. [production on season two]. And in a few weeks, we started filming season two, which is all the brain space any of us have right now.”
It won’t come as a big surprise to anyone following the development of The Rings of Power that a second season is on the way. Amazon Studios gave the green light for a second season in November 2019 (by Deadline (opens in new tab)) — not just a sign of how confident the company was in its adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, but a decision that would have allowed the cast and crew to film seasons 1 and 2 back-to-back.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 ended those plans. The show had been in full production for just a month in New Zealand before it was suspended indefinitely in March 2020 because of the global pandemic. Principal photography began in May 2020 – under new safety guidelines issued by the New Zealand government – with filming ending in August 2021.
As long as there are no similar complications or a resurgence of Covid-19 in the coming weeks, The Rings of Power season 2 will go into production soon. According to Time Magazine (opens in new tab)Filming will likely begin in October 2022 – a timeframe that lines up with what Weber confirmed to about the filming start date.
Unlike the first season or previous Lord of the Rings live-action projects, the next installment of the Prime Video series will not be filmed in New Zealand. Instead, production will move to the UK, with Variety (opens in new tab) reporting on Bray Film Studios, Berkshire and Bovingdon Airfield, Hemel Hempstead will be used primarily for set-based filming.
Meanwhile, co-showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay said weekly entertainment (opens in new tab) that they were exploring filming locations in the UK in June. According to The Guardian (opens in new tab), Scotland was seen as a pioneer in on-location filming sequences, but it’s unclear if that’s still the case. Regardless, expect Amazon to confirm that filming for The Rings of Power season 2 has begun in the near future.
