In the classic film 12 Angry Men, Henry Fonda plays a dissenting voice in the crowd, whose intention is to make the other characters question their previous assumptions. And when it comes to iPhone 14 leaks, we’ve got a new Fonda in town.
We’ve heard many, many leaks pointing to an iPhone 14 Max, which will have the vanilla model’s specs but a larger screen – in fact, we’ve heard so many voices claiming this phone was coming, that we’ve stopped questioning its validity. But maybe that will change going forward.
Korean leaker lanzuk (who has a mixed record, but generally accurate), posting on social media site naver (opens in new tab)stated that there will indeed be a new member of the iPhone 14 range. However, lanzuk says it will be an iPhone 14 Plus, not Max, that is on the way.
It looks like it’s the same kind of phone that the Max was expected to be, with a 6.7-inch screen, the name being the main change.
If need be, this would be the first time Apple has used this suffix for an iPhone since the iPhone 8 Plus, although it’s still used for software like Apple TV Plus.
Some leakers have already spoken out against this leak – notables who have spoken out about the 14 Max before – and one example is ShrimpApplePro (opens in new tab)which has as mixed a track record as lanzuk.
We’re not convinced either – enough leaks have pointed to the name ‘Max’ to make it very likely. Furthermore, lanzuk does not suggest that the iPhone 14 Pro Max becomes the Pro Plus, and we imagine that Apple would like to maintain its Pro rather than Pro symmetry.
Analysis: What’s in a Name?
What’s in a name? Not a lot, usually – but in this case, maybe a lot.
You see, many iPhone 14 leaks have pointed to the Max name – if they’re wrong, it means that perhaps a lot of the information provided by these leaks could also be incorrect.
Perhaps the next phone won’t have identical specs to the base model, and perhaps the prices we’ve heard could also be inaccurate.
Like Henry Fonda’s character in 12 Angry Men, the point of this leak isn’t to convince us of something new, but to make us doubt what we previously assumed to be true – and it totally worked.
Now, let’s take every iPhone 14 Max or Plus leak with a pinch of salt – this might not be the new best iPhone after all.
