Full spoilers for 2017’s Logan follow.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have addressed the biggest questions from Marvel fans following the news that Wolverine will co-star in Deadpool 3.
The acting duo, who confirmed that the fan-favorite adamantium-laced superhero would appear in Deadpool 3 yesterday (Tuesday, September 27), took to YouTube and social media to answer the most pressing questions fans have about the Marvel Phase 5 project.
Check out the video below:
In the 75-second video, Reynolds and Jackman mainly explain how Wolverine will make the leap into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The answer comes after fans questioned how the superpowered being with claws can exist in Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut, with him dying in 2017’s Logan. That movie was Jackman’s supposedly final appearance as Wolverine and one of the last X-Ray movies. Men that Fox produced.
“Don’t worry, we’ll answer them all. [your questions]”, Jackman says. “For example, how is Wolverine alive after Logan?”
As Reynolds quickly explains, Logan takes place in 2029 in a separate timeline for the MCU’s increasingly complicated timeline. “Logan died in Logan, [so] let’s not touch that,” adds Reynolds, before the Free Guy star starts to open up on the Deadpool 3 plot.
Or so it seems. As Reynolds and Jackman begin to outline the story, Wham’s Wake Me Up Before You Go Go starts playing over the top, meaning we can’t hear what the duo discusses. It’s a typically funny, bait and switch video from Reynolds and company. As the audio returns, the duo thanks Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige for the opportunity before a montage of footage showing their friendship over the years wraps up filming.
Given the technology available to audio experts at present, we wouldn’t be surprised if someone tried – and successfully – to isolate Reynolds and Jackman’s conversation to hear what they actually say. Full transparency: We’d be surprised if the duo actually said anything spoilery or significant about the narrative of Deadpool 3.
Before yesterday’s announcement, we knew that Deadpool 3 was coming and that it would be the first R-rated MCU movie. Feige confirmed this in January 2021. But aside from a few brief updates from Reynolds and the film’s writers – Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick – there was very little new information about how development on Deadpool 3 was progressing.
Marvel fans were disappointed by Deadpool 3’s absence from D23 Expo 2022. Now, though, we learn about Jackman’s involvement and superhero movie release date. It’s coming on September 6, 2024, which means Deadpool’s MCU debut will either end Phase 5 or start Phase 6 instead of Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie reboot.
Jackman’s involvement in Deadpool 3 came just hours before news about another MCU movie – Marvel Studios’ Blade – revealed that the vampire superhero movie had hit several hurdles in its own development. It’s unclear whether the Phase 5 movie is in serious jeopardy or not, but it doesn’t look like it will make it to the November 3, 2023 theatrical release date at this rate.
